Trip to Buffalo
So last weekend we were in Buffalo, New York for the wedding of my good friend from Tulane, the venerable Dr. Tom Stanley. The trip up there was fine. We had to leave really early, so that wasn't too fun, but we managed to get out of Austin before the thunderstorms hit, so that was good. I lost my phone in Newark, though I would get it back (more on that later) in a few days. We finally made it to Buffalo in time to check in the hotel, freshen up, and then head to the supper that night.
Several of my friends from Tulane were there, and it was great to see people that I hadn't seen in so long. One of the cool things at the dinner was that there was someone doing henna. I forgot the actual name for the technique, my apologies. Carrie had it done to her hand... this is what it looked like right after it was applied:
We were pretty exhausted, so after we made it back to the hotel, we had a quick beer with people down in the bar, and then headed to sleep. Saturday morning started early with the Catholic ceremony at 8:30. That was followed by a continental breakfast, then at 11:30 we had the Hindu ceremony in the ballroom at the hotel. The Hindu ceremony was very colorful, vibrant, and dynamic. We had little idea what was going on, but it was a lot of fun!
After the ceremony was lunch: a delicious buffet of Indian food. After lunch we changed into some comfy clothes and headed out to the American side of Niagra Falls with my friends from Tulane. The American side is pretty peaceful as they have built a New York state park around it.
We didn't stay out there too long as we had to get back for cocktail hour at 6:30 with the reception at 7:30. The reception was a lot of fun. Thanks to Tom and Aarthi for having us up there, it was a blast!
On Sunday, Carrie and I were in no hurry to wake up, but we wanted to make sure we had plenty of time to do whatever we were going to do. We weren't exactly sure what that was. We found a place to eat brunch, and then headed towards the Canadian side of the falls. We ended up parking on the American side in the park (free parking, woo!) and then walked towards Canada. It was pretty crazy to walk into another country. The Canadian side is ... uhm, interesting. Lots of big buildings, lots of casinos, lots of people. But when you turn around, you realize what they have going for them:
The view of the falls from that side is impressive. We walked all along that side, and then started the trek back. It was a good walk and the weather was cool, clear, and windy.
After we left the falls, we decided to go try and find the Erie Canal. And find it we did:
We had a nice drive through rural New York, and when we got back to the hotel, we decided, "When in Rome..." so we headed out for some wings to a place named Duff's right near the hotel. Very tasty!
The next morning, it was in the 40s, raining hard, and super windy. In April. Seriously? Well, we made to the airport, and after about an hour delay took off. Needless to say, our little jet got pushed around like a rag doll taking off. Once we hit our cruising altitude it was decently smooth, and when we landed in Newark I set out to get my phone. Luckily, we had a long layover. Unfortunately, it took me all 2 hours to get my phone back. The Newark terminal A is the absolutely most ghetto thing I've ever seen. Terminal C is actually very nice. Let me just say I went in and out of security multiple times. Anyway, I got my phone, we got on the plane, and had an uneventful flight back to Austin.
It was good to be home, and we've had a good, normal week this week. Last night we met up with Jerry and Dot to head out for dinner. We went to Vespaio Enoteca down on South Congress. There is always a wait, so since I had gotten a new lens this week that lets me take pictures in really low light, I brought the camera with us in an effort to get some interesting shots. I am not sure if it is interesting, but I like this one for some reason:
Dinner was delicious, and the company was of course wonderful! :)
Today is Saturday, and it is great to be home. FYI, to see more of the pictures from our trip head over the Buffalo/Niagra set on flickr.

3M Picture Recap
Well, I'll cut to the chase. Here are two shots of the infamous marathon graffiti (that has luckily been pressure washed off the fence now).
The first shot I posted so people could read the entire message. I actually like the second shot more because I actually got people reading it as they went by.
Next up is an amusing sequence of pictures as Lynn ran by and threw one of her layers (it got warmer as the race went on) at Johann. In that picture notice the people behind Lynn observing the graffiti. Then we see Johann holding it. The second one is somewhat posed, but it still makes me laugh.
The last picture is one as Johann and I were walking up Trinity to the finish line. I like how the stadium pokes up in the background. There are many ways this picture could be better, but I still enjoy it.
Feel free to browse the entire set.

Almost out of here
We are finishing preparations for heading to Baton Rouge. We still haven't packed up the car yet, and I still haven't figured out exactly how we're going to arrange everything with the bike and all, but we'll figure it out.
I can't believe the snow that Michigan is getting right now. That is pretty impressive. The entire state is white on the map. Good luck to Mary and Richard getting home.
We still seem to have some fog hanging around Austin. It is supposed to burn off, though, so hopefully it won't be too bad as we head east.
Well, okay, back to the packing. Later!
